I was raping the internet, looking DESPERATELY for 8059BOX (only for the Banyuu part because apidgid;; if ANYONE doesn't get a metaphorical hard-on from her art, they are DEAD inside) and I came across lots of other 8059 junk (plus this which made me laugh my ass off, squeal like a pig in a rut, fangasm a couple times then facepalm at my own stupidity [link] ) that I'd mostly seen before but still gleed over like the fucktard fangirl I am.
So I was rolling through LJ for fanfics and other links and shit, when, finally, FINALLY AFTER SO LONG LOOKING, I came across the translation for Amano's radio interview. ([link] is part2, link for part1 is there too) I'd known for so long that Amano had a 'secret BL pairing' in her manga, but I'd never actually read the interview itself, just other people saying 'YEAH, THE BL PAIRING SHE TALKED ABOUT IN HER INTERVIEW' so fff yeah.
And, of course, the people calling in to ask her questions about her manga; namely, the question of her mysterious BL pairing. Amano stated that she isn't really a shounen-ai fan, and that most of her favourite pairings are NOT shounen-ai. However, she does like some BL pairings, and if they're well thought out and developed well, then she grows to like them.
Fair enough, KHR is a shounen manga, there will NEVER canonically be any BL pairings because the story is TECHNICALLY supposed to be for a male readership (despite the fact KHR's fanbase is like 98% foaming fangirl who are looking specifically to slash Amano's pretty pretty boys, especially our resident fandom bicycle Tsuna with his moe moe I'm an imbecile and therefore completely rapeable nature and then secondly Gokudera with his moe moe I'm really tsundere, behold my sparkling moe face).
ANYWAY.
Okay, so, if we're going off the manga, imo the most canon pairings are, 8059 (seriously, these two are joined at the hip, you never see them without each other and there's just SO many hints), D18 (obvious reasons, same as 8059, except these guys fit together with their fucking weapons, I mean, jesus, whips and handcuffs Amano, are you for real?), XS (with a push, because let's face it, XS is less of a relationship and more of a 'hold still while I pound you into the mattress' kind of thing), 6918 (because what doesn't scream canon about two guys who constantly want to rip each other's throats out) and to a certain extent 5927 (I'll only say this is canon on the surface, because of Gokudera's unhealthy mancrush on Tsuna which, looked at deeper, is platonic to the nth degree).
Fuck me. I laugh in your faces, because ffff, I've bolded the parts that are obvious (basically the caller asked about Amano's 'secret BL pairing' if she 'doesn't like BL' );
Amano: *laughs* I suppose people will keep asking. Well, this pairing was originally one I liked a lot because of the bond these two develop. However, I wouldn't have actually considered it a shounen-ai relationship if it weren't for my two assistants who help with screentones. Both of them went on about the different parts of the pairings and the different views and the characteristics that make it a great pairing. Eventually, it just grew on me. However, I still first and foremost consider them to be very close by a bond of friendship.
Bond they develop. Opposing viewpoints, different characteristics, i.e. OPPOSITES.
And you all know that darling saying, opposites attract.So, if we look at this in a little detail; the two are friends. That immediately cuts out 6918 and D18, XS sort of too, but I suppose they're obviously friends to a degree, even if neither of them would EVER admit it. Which cuts us down to 8059 and 5927. And, hnngh, obviously I'm biased anyway, but whilst Tsuna and Gokudera are friends, their personalities aren't that contrasting (obviously they're not similar, but they aren't opposite by any means) and their bond is pretty much established from the beginning; nothing about it develops apart from the fact Tsuna comes to accept Gokudera's scary loyalty and takes on his role as 'boss'.
And hm, let's take a quick look at 8059;
Typical love-hate relationship y/y? They're competitive as fuck at the beginning. No, scratch that, ALL the way through.
Complete opposites of personalities; Gokudera is the typical wangsty emo badboy 'oh I've had such a hard childhood and will now consequently inflict my suffering on the outside world because of it' and Yamamoto is your typical sunny idiot who grew up with a good family life, surrounded by friends and generally having a good outlook on life.<Opposites.
The more specific points of their personality; Gokudera- tempermental, incredibly intelligent, rude | Yamamoto- happy-go-lucky, not quite so smart, super friendly.<Opposites.
'Different views'. I don't even need to explain this one. I:
Gokudera HATES Yamamoto in the beginning. Well, up till incredibly recently in the manga actually; at least claims to, anyway. He often says 'I hate you', 'go die' and other such insults.
WHICH, consequently, develops into a very close friendship (which Gokudera denies vehemently simply because he's Gokudera and would obviously NEVER be friends with someone like Yamamoto); the fight versus Gamma where they eventually team up because Yamamoto goes all srs bzns on Gokudera's ass (and then the part AFTERWARDS where they're recuperating and saying nice things about each other blah blah), the scene in Melone base where Gokudera reaches out to Yamamoto when the floors start moving and our resident baseball player gives back the most blatant 'Iloveyouplz' face ever ([link]). <And herein you have your 'developing bond'.
SO OKAY, I'M OBVIOUSLY GOING TO LEAN TOWARDS 8059 ANYWAY, I'M BIASED BUT FUCK, YOU CANNOT DENY THAT THEY FIT PERFECTLY WITH WHAT SHE SAYS, OKAY.
BUT, as if that wasn't fucking awesome enough, Amano THEN goes on to say (when the fan asks for a hint);
Amano: *laughs* Nope, sorry. It's a secret. Although I will tell you this. I actually have two pairings that I like that *could* be considered shounen-ai pairings, if you want to look at it like that. Whether or not my fans want to interpret that is up to them *laughs*
And granted, this second pairing is anyone's guess with such a vague comment about it, but, I'm banking on D18. Without any hesitation whatsoever.
Also, I read somewhere in passing that Amano wrote a doujin for one of her friends, but refused to reveal the pairing. What I wouldn't give for the ninja skills to steal that doujin.
So pfft, that's all I've got to say. I just wanted to gloat really. If 8059 turns out NOT to be her pairing I will genuinely eat my hat. Well, one of them anyway.
